Profile Information

I have contributed to Cantaraville the work:
Editor and Publisher
To submit book-length works, visit Cantarabooks.

For media inquiries fax 866.365.4874.

Submissions of short fiction, poetry (3-5 poems per submission please), essays, interviews, stage play or screenplay excerpts, nonfiction book and novel excerpts – whether unpublished, to be published or previously published – and book and film reviews welcome all year-round. Preferred length 1,500-5,000 words. Simultaneous submissions, previous publication acceptable. Our policy is to publish the work of no more than five different poets per issue. We gladly accept submissions from past contributors; our policy, however, is not to publish work by the same author in consecutive issues. (Accepted work from contributors to Cantaraville One, for example, will have to wait to be published in Cantaraville Three rather than Two).

At Cantaraville, a writer can expect to encounter editors who edit, not simply accumulate or facilitate – editors who, taking great delight in the power of the English language, will do their best to ensure that a writer accomplishes his or her intent in any chosen piece, whether story, essay or poem.

Send email with the subject line "Submission: Story/Poem/Article by Your Name" with .doc, .rtf of .txt attachment of manuscript, with word count and bio anywhere in the attachment, to Senior Editor Michael Matheny at cantaraville@gmail.com. No photos or illustrations, please. Average response time is two months. Submissions not in the format outlined above will be relegated to the bottom of our reading pile and may end up taking well over two months to get to. We ask for one-time, non-exclusive, text-only, electronic-only rights. We select and submit eligible work for consideration for the O. Henry Prize, the Pushcart Prize, and other editor-nominated literary prizes. Cantarabooks is a member of the esteemed New York Center for Independent Publishing (NYCIP) and the venerable Council of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP).

If we do accept your work, this is what you'll receive in your email:

AGREEMENT: Please consider this email to be more or less our Author-Publisher agreement for the rights to publish your Work in Cantaraville, a serial publication in PDF, on a one-time, non-exclusive, text-only, electronic-only basis.

RIGHTS: Author retains the copyright and the right to publish this Work anywhere else at any time, even concurrently with the publication of this issue. If you do publish this Work after it appears in Cantaraville, we’d appreciate it if you acknowledged our previous relationship somewhere in the publication (such as in your bio or in the verso). In turn, we’ll acknowledge your Work’s previous publication.

EDITORIAL RIGHTS: The Editor has the right to make minor corrections in spelling or grammar. If the Editor has a question (for example, on the correct spelling of an uncommon proper name) the Author will be contacted first before we publish the Work.

PERMISSIONS: The Work will contain no work created by another author. For example, don’t quote more than the title of a song as we can’t afford to get the legal rights to reprint any lyrics. Exception is given for book passages quoted in reviews, as they are understood to be in the context of discussing that very book.

BIO: Please send a short bio and let us know if it’s okay to publish your email address so that interested readers, which may include other editors and possibly agents, can get in touch with you.

PAYMENT: Author will receive one PDF copy of the issue his or her work appears in.

Thanks again. This is a very cool thing you've done here. I look forward to meeting some writers as they seem to be the only people who can tolerate a conversation about writing.

I may live in San Francisco but, alas, I work in Palo Alto so such a get-together is sadly out for me.
